Abdominoplasty, also called a tummy tuck is a procedure in which the abdominal area is tightened, eliminating excess fatty tissue and skin. The abdominal fascia and muscles are also tightened leaving the abdomen taut and smooth.
Many people develop diet and exercise resistant areas of fat, loose skin, and other issues with their abdominal area as a result of aging, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy.
The abdominoplasty procedure can resolve all these issues, leaving the patient with a flatter, thinner, smaller, more youthful looking waistline.
The abdominoplasty tummy tuck procedure
There are two primary techniques in use for abdominoplasty today: Partial and full.
Depending on the extent and type of abdominoplasty being performed, your cosmetic surgeon may combine the standard abdominoplasty procedure with some form of liposuction to remove additional fat from the area.
In a partial abdominoplasty , the surgeon makes an incision in the pelvic area. Working from that incision, excess fat is removed, the underlying muscle is tightened and the skin is pulled taut over the area. The excess skin is then removed and carefully sutured into place leaving a smooth surface without sagging.
In a full abdominoplasty , the surgeon makes the same type of initial incision as in the partial tummy tuck - from one hipbone to the next-but in this procedure, the navel is detached, allowing the skin to be pulled up exposing the abdominal area up to the ribcage, and allowing the surgeon to work on the entire abdominal area, rather than just the area between the navel and the pelvis. As in the partial abdominoplasty, the surgeon removes excess fat, tightens the underlying muscles, and pulls the skin taut over the area, trimming any excess. The surgeon also creates a new, natural looking navel .
